Obituary

Dr. Manas Kamal Chaudhuri who belonged to the Tribal Tribune group of authors is no more.

An accidental injury snatched him away from us on 24 September 2005. It is shocking to realize that a man as dynamic, athlete and full of life is not in our midst. A versatile anthropologist being trained under famous anthropologist couple Prof. S. C. Dube and Prof. Leela Dube, Dr. Chaudhuri had combined all traditions of classical anthropology and developed a way of looking at people in broader perspective. He tried to understand a contemporary community (tribal or non-tribal) as an outcome of its own cultural traditions combing with various exogenous factors and demographic composition. His made video graphic documentaries of endangered communities and customs and received national honor from the President of India. As the Director of Culture Research Institute, a research wing of West Bengal Government, Dr. Chaudhuri could make this institute a vibrant institution. He died in harness.

He had many more years to contribute. His death as an irreparable loss to the Tribal Tribune.

May his soul rest in peace.
